Dennis Smith Jr goes down in the books as the best point guard in the class of 2016. He’s got that edge and he’s proven himself every time he’s been in a big matchup. He’s known for his high flying dunks but he’s got the total package of facilitating skills, finishing skills, and jump shooting skills. He’s a guru in the pick and roll and he’ll make the right play whether it be throwing the lob, hitting the duck-in, kicking it out, or finishing himself. Defensively he is one of the most impactful on-ball defenders in the country. He’s got extremely quick feet and hands and comes up with several steals. The summary of it all is that Dennis’s most valuable asset is his competitive nature. He loves to compete and he doesn’t back down from anyone.
There’s no question that Mark Gottfried got a very special player in Dennis. We got the opportunity to ask him why he chose NC State and he responded, “I chose NC State because that school, in my eyes was the best fit for me. Their staff was very loyal and consistent with me throughout the summer and I appreciate that the most. They have all the pieces in place for me to come in and showcase my talent and win games. You haven’t accomplished anything until you win it all and I believe we can make that happen next season. Also my relationship with the staff is great. They were the first high major school to offer me so I’ve known their staff longer than anyone else who was in my final 6. They put their tryst and belief in me so I’m going to do the same.”
